The artist has always enjoyed the work of Alberto Giacometti, and Italian modernist sculptor of the mid-twentieth century, with his haunting, elongated figures, often placed carefully in open, isolating spaces. The artist has also had a long-time desire to travel to some of the Greek isles, especially Santorini, with their striking, ancient volcanic landscapes and architecture that seems so geologically bonded with the topography. Long ago came the day dream of merging these two enthusiasms and finally this painting has emerged, with its current overtones of population displacement and a military presence (in the form of a naval corvette) in the Mediterranean and elsewhere in our world.
