Graham Davis exhibition |
Graham Davis' exhibition Spirit of Place is part of the 2013 SALA (South Australian Living Artists) FESTIVAL at Woodside Hall, Onkaparinga Valley Road, Woodside, Adelaide Hills, Saturday and Sunday 10 and 11 August 2013 from 11am until 5pm.
Davis' work is founded in observation of the natural and built world, including people. The locations named in this drawing and painting exhibition are some of the places Graham has lived in, visited or returned to. Davis likes to concentrate on specific atmospheres and feelings in places and situations as they appear at the time of viewing. Observational or reflective moments are usually depicted in black and white initially. They are then worked further in monochrome or developed through colour phases to a stage of super image and colour rendition.

West, O'Connor and Hargarve in SCAP3D |
The finalists for the Sunshine Coast Art Prize have just been announced and Di West is delighted that her work The Last Tree has been included in the 40 finalists for the 3D section of this prestigious art prize. This is a National Prize and will be held at the Noosa Regional Gallery (Pelican Street, Tewantin, Qld).
Speaking about her entry, West said "I was compelled to create this work after watching a documentary on the clearing of the Amazon rain forests. It seemed not only sad, but so alarming to me that this is still happening. I wanted to do my little bit to send a message that we can change things our our world. Ideally this sculpture will convey my feelings and hopefully make my thoughts understood to the viewer. In this work I create every element completely by hand from wax. A little new leaf holds firmly to the tree, my idea of hope, of optism".
Ann O'Connor and Lyndal Hargrave are also included in the exhibition. Winners will be announced at the opening 29 August and the exhibition continues until 20 October, 2013 |

Jocelyn Thompson East Coast Images |
Jocelyn Thompson's image 'Looking East 1' was selected for the prestigious Lethbridge 10 000 small scale art award. The gallery received a record number of entries this year, and the judges based their selection on creativity, originality and skill. Jocelyn's image is part of a new series based on late evening photographs of Australia’s east coast. The images explore nature’s inner workings rather than its surface appearance. The scintillating patterns of sand, light, waves, wind and water set up visual rhythms and resonance that continue past the edges of the square.
