'My fiftieth birthday in April warranted attempting a new self-portrait, something not tried since the nineties. Hitting the half-century offers an opportunity to reflect and how better than in a studio mirror, looking back on what has been and forward to what might still be; considering what is and is not or won’t be – in terms of art practice, career, family, health. Uncertainty arises in different ways to the half-veiled self-portrait seen in the background at left, created twenty years earlier. Risks are still taken but the steps can be faltering. Body image isn’t a non-issue by fifty but it is more accepting of the way things are. . .'
