Reminiscent of a picture story book, this early watercolour is a celebration of a children’s book the artist still possesses from his own childhood. The story tells of a black horse living in a snow-covered Russian landscape who would prefer to be white and so presses the artist of the village to paint her with white paint. Something of a fracas then ensues and the action is played out in a series of vignettes that cycle round the picture. Framed in a blackwood frame for the exhibition 'Other Lands'.
